Solid Winton result despite old chassis

REVIEW: Karl Reindler Racing, Winton Motor Raceway, VIC
V8 Supercars Rnd#27/28 (November 2-4)

After the loss of his primary chassis in the hands of international guest driver Franck Montagny at the Gold Coast, and then his secondary machine at Abu Dhabi after a fire thanks to a hit from behind at the start of race three, Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing's Karl Reindler was forced into an 'unknown' five and a half year old chassis for Winton's penultimate round of the V8 Supercar Championships, where despite the setback, he had one of his most satisfying weekends of the year.

"Who'd have thought.." Karl reflected. "The chassis hadn't been run for some time, and was well down on the spec of the other Kelly Racing cars, and yet by Sunday afternoon I was not only the fastest of the four Kelly Racing entries, but the seventh fastest car on the circuit.."

With little data to work on, and even less to explore after the data-logging system AND the dashboard on the #11 Fair Dinkum Sheds Commodore failed right through Friday's practice sessions, the FDSR team were well behind the eight-ball by Saturday qualifying.

"I was forced to use Rick's [Kelly] data, because they just couldn't get my car working, not even a dashboard lap time display, so we were working pretty blind, yet despite that we qualified just outside the top 20, and were only eight tenths off pole, and less than four tenths off Rick who was ninth.

"After the drama off the start with Brighty getting turned around at turn three, I actually managed to move into the top ten early in the race as some of the other teams stopped early to change to the soft Dunlop, but as they started to come through and bottlenecks started out on circuit I dropped back after my stop, but we held station from there to finish exactly where we started, and second Kelly Racing car home, all with no data..!

"The boys kept working on the data issue overnight and we had some luck for Sunday morning, but to start day two with your first real data on a five and a half year old car was a big setback, and we actually dropped back in qualifying despite being three tenths quicker than Saturday!!

"Starting on the hard compound tyre we were reasonably pacey, but I kept having to 'stack' behind Murph during the pit stops, so lost a little time there, but during the second stint, the car was amazing, it was almost on rails.

"It didn't have the outright pace of the leaders, but we were quick, and after leaving the pits last, I moved past a dozen cars legitimately as their tyres went off, and my pace remained consistent. In the end it allowed me to move back into the top ten before my second stop.

"We pitted late, but not as late as some, and as they worked their way through I wasn't in a position to hold them off. In the end I caught Dean Fiore very quickly, but needed to get around him and make use of my better rubber, but I couldn't find a way through and followed him across the line in 15th.

"If I'd made the move, I would have been good for about 12th I think, which all things considered, was a pretty mighty effort from the FDSR team.

"As for what car I'll be in for Homebush for the final in two weeks - that decision hasn't been made yet, but I'll be looking for a good result there, and hopefully rain, not for the fans, but because it eliminates the speed and performance advantage some of the leading teams have. I could think of nothing better than ending the season with a top ten, or even a podium.. wishful thinking perhaps..!?"

For the Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing Team it's back to their Melbourne base to prepare for the final round of the 2012 season on the streets of Sydney with the Telstra 500 at Homebush on the first weekend of December.
