Heading north for the winter..

Karl Reindler

PREVIEW: Karl Reindler Racing, Skycity Triple Crown
V8 Supercars Rnd#12/13 (June 15-17), Hidden Valley, Darwin, NT

Coming off a solid run at Phillip Island four weeks ago, Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing's Karl Reindler admits he can't wait to get to Darwin for races 12 and 13 of the season, but whilst you can't blame the West Australian for wanting to head north from his new found home in Melbourne, his motivation stretches well beyond the chance to just see the sun again.

"I'm really looking forward to Darwin. It's always a challenging event, and it's one I love - from the race, to the crowd, and the fun Darwin atmosphere - but it's the chance to get back behind the wheel and try some of the things we've been working on in the factory at Kelly Racing that really has me fired up.

"Last year in Darwin I had to run an interim car after destroying my primary car at Perth in the start line incident, so I didn't get a chance to carry the form and feel of that car through to Darwin. This time though we have a few tricks to try and keep improving the car which performed brilliantly at Phillip island, an event which could very nearly have seen us finish inside the top ten.

"The strategy in Darwin will be a bit like Perth, with the hard and soft tyre combinations. We've been toying with the idea of stopping twice in the longer race, despite the fact we can comfortably go the distance on fuel. We think that we might get better value out of fresher tyres, especially given the tyre wear on the softs in the heat, so that might se us creep up the order.

"We'll just keep chipping away and see how we go. There's some things we want to try on Friday which are bordering on experimental, but they're things that could very well provide the edge we need. I also need to focus on my driving, because we've been chasing our tail with the weather and various issues from round to round, so I haven't been able to just focus on myself, so it will be nice to go to a good track, with a set of known variables, and go out and just do the job."

Regarded as one of the fittest drivers in V8 Supercars, Karl admits that at times, he has been 'shown up' by some of his team mates, but that currently he's in good shape.

"Over the last week we've been doing some additional fitness testing, and I'm happy to say that I recorded far stronger results than I have before, and I was well up on our pre-season results. I'm a little disappointed that Rick [Kelly] didn't get involved, because he beat me in a couple of tests earlier in the year, but he said he couldn't compete because he had a sore neck. I think he was just scared..!"
