Back to the future for FDSR and Reindler at Bathurst

PREVIEW: Karl Reindler Racing, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000
V8 Supercars Rnd#21 (October 4-7), Bathurst, NSW

"Maybe it's the fact that it's the 50th anniversary of the event that has me all fired up for the weekend ahead, but I don't know that I've ever been more excited ahead of a race than I am for this weekend," Karl Reindler admitted on the eve of the 2012 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

"It might be the new liveries that are appearing for the weekend - and I'm especially proud of the livery we have on our car - but there's a real buzz in the air in the leadup, it's great!"

Added to the mix of Championship Series cars that have adopted a one-off special 50th anniversary livery, Karl's car - which he's sharing with New Zealander Daniel Gaunt - reflects the livery used by the 'King of the Mountain' - Peter Brock - in his debut at Mount Panorama in 1969 in an HT Monaro GTS350 that he shared with Des West.

"I love it, I think it's one of the nicest looking liveries that has been revealed so far. With any luck we can not only replicate the livery, but also the result, with Brock and West having finished third that year behind team-mates Colin Bond and Tony Roberts (winners) and Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland."

After a mixed season to date, Karl is hoping the new look will re-fire his championship season, but admits that Bathurst has always been kind to the West Australian.

"I've been lucky to have finished in all four starts so far - I hope I can continue that trend this weekend. Bathurst is a track where I always seem to go well, perhaps because it's so physical and demanding mentally.

"Last year I was hanging on to a comfortable top ten finish before being caught out in the dying stages on an oil spill at the Chase which forced a lockup and a flat-spot which was difficult to manage over the closing laps, but we held on to finish 14th.

"The Kelly's too have been strong at Bathurst in the past, with all three of my team-mates (Todd Kelly, Rick Kelly and Greg Murphy) having won on the mountain.

"Strategy always plays into the equation, something I know only too well and again, like Sandown, it's an area where my engineer Mathieu Galoche has a lot of experience from his time in Europe with the Le Mans series.

"I've been doing some homework on weather too, and it looks like being reasonable up till Sunday which is expected to be cool and possibly wet at times. That's great for us, because our cars are always strong in the wet, but we need to work on our dry weather setup and that will be the focus of practice.

"Last year David Reynolds ran the car with Kelly Racing, and he openly admits it was the best car he'd ever driven, in fact he managed to qualify fourth and run inside the lead pack for much of the race.

"We have that setup, and will run a hybrid of that and what we've discovered in all our testing as a starting point. From there we'll refine it and work our way towards a top ten finish. I know it's achievable because we were on target last year.

"It will be nice too that Dan [Gaunt] will get extra miles in the Carrera Cup race, so he'll be well and truly 'dialed in' by the time Sunday comes around.

"Depending on the weather and the strategy, it's likely I'll start and finish, and we might double-stint Dan during the mid section of the race, it just depends on what the weather is like and where we are in the field.

"All I can say is bring it on, I can't wait!"
